The spell used to fly ("RideBird"?) would likely have to be very, very, very costly to mana or resources. Even more so than Windwalk already is.
Spoiler: Unrelated to the topicShow

Edit: Oh! Brilliant! o-o It could be a glider ability! Since you're having trouble with getting birds anyway, you could teach them to use hang-gliders instead! It's not all that far off, and with magic and such, I'm sure hang-gliders would work for the time period. The gliders would only cost the initial mana, but like the hang-gliders they would represent, you would only be able to slowly move downward (like chickens) instead of fly. Useful, but not overpowered.

I like that idea, scales! (Btw your right, the numbers on windwalk are weird...) I hope you can at least move horizontally while gliding down, so that it serves at least some purpose. And as for a "Ridebird" Spell, don't you think it would be amazing if there was actually a plugin that added Loftwings into minecraft? It would, of course, need a very very expensive license, though (but maybe Zelphair gets you a 50% discount like archer does at the Anera store?).

please remember this will manly be a school for a captains license, the bird flying bit could be added on, but there is a list of things we would need to make this school a reality
1. A teacher, He/She would need a captains license, as well as enough experience to RP teach for atleast 10 hours (2 hours for 5 days)
2. A school, A place where those learning about ships and airships can get hands on training as well as book-work
3. A time, The school as I have envisioned it would run 5 days a week for 2 hours a day. The courses would need to be mastered on each day, so a set date would be needed
4. Possible sponsorships? A school like this could gather in a few sponsors from the surrounding nations (I can go into more detail about this in another post if anyone needs any examples of how this would work)
5.Students, there are many people who desire a Captains license, but the school would only be able to take in a select few. There would need to be an application process as well as possible requirements to get in ( I can come up with a few examples of this as well if anyone would like me to help them)
6..A curriculum of activities that not only teach the students new things (like actually teach people shit they didn't know before) but also one that challenges them, so that there is an actual possibility of failing the course. I believe this will create a sense of tension throughout the student body, thus creating an actual sense of realism in this school.

Maybe give them a small, schooner class ship and have them run an obstacle course? Or perhaps for shipwright they need to build a ship and have it approved by a panel of judges? there should also be naval combat simulations, it might be a good idea to develop different "Teams" so to speak, where they appoint a captain and gunmen and a sniper/lookout, so that they are ready when it comes time for a frigate-class test (combat, navigation, etc) Oh, and that reminds me! There should be an open-sea navigation test, where they have to sail from one continent to the other and back ASAP, stopping at various points along the way. There should also be other classes that can be taken, like ship building, course planning (essentially makes the maps for the captain), and maybe even deep-sea treasure hunting. This way, the school is more diverse, and if we become popular, we can have graduate students say "Ship builder for hire! Extra low price! Certified by the ACAT (Aspiring Captain's Academy of Templehelm)!" And by the way, is ACAT a good name? Aspiring Captain's Academy of Templehelm? I just came up with it off the top of my head, so I'm not sure. And now I'm beginning to think we need more schools in Templehelm, like that old monster hunting academy...

I like the name ACAT, although the battle course would be something i would have to go against. Mainly for the reason that none of the students would have a captains license to begin with. There are other server who do have this as a mini-game, which is what it sounds like.
The school I had in mind would be only for aspiring Captains, not shipwrights. Although since this is only an idea for everyone else, should they like that idea I say let them add that in their school (although it would just be more work) perhaps have a separate school for shipwrights and such.

well, my logic was that you never see a college with only one course. Sure, some of them tend to center around a single theme, but they always have a variety of classes and programs available. It mostly just depends on how big the campus winds up being. Maybe there could be a dock with one big ship, that takes the students to the campus, which is floating out at sea. I may wind up doing something like this sooner or later... maybe with another character, though... but perhaps it should be a school for something else, I don't know... *fades into mumbling*

Okay I love your ideas blackhoel! Just not about different sizes of ships... And if they could sail from one continent to the other they would already have the licenses... And what about learning drills? Like escape plans, attack drills, what to do if there is a fire, or if under attack, maybe what to do if the ship is beached on the shore? Maybe a lot of money to enter the academy but it would be free after the fee to enter and you would be in until you passed which would be hard but not nearly impossible due to the required RP. All you would have to do is make ship that is acceptable by the ships plugin and looks acceptable to judges, make the signs right, explain how the things work (like "these are the anchors, this is the sail, it must be like this to float because, etc...)And to learn to be a captain you would have to list the controls, do a test like said above by blackhoel, and then be given a pass for a free license which would still be obtained at San Baala.

Also why would a bird take mana? If you have a bird big enough to ride it should be able to carry you with out you using mana...

it could use mana to TAME the bird, but afterwards it should be free. atleast that's how i would like it to be.
I agree with the multiple classes so i'll go ahead and come up with a set of courses for students to take (why not, i'm bored)
Course 1. The history of the ship - mainly writing and discussion about the history of the common ship and it's evolution into sky ships
Course 2. Modern Maneuvering - Students sail small schooners (vanilla boats) around a course of lily-pads, small islands, etc.
Course 3. Star navigation - Students will learn how to navigate the sea's with only the stars to guide them (this will also help them travel on foot)
Course 4. Aviation basics - Students will learn the basics of aviation, this includes air navigation tools, steam pressure gauging, etc.
Course 5. Tactical ship to ship combat training (TSSCT) - Students will learn the basics for ship to ship combat, whether it is sea to air, air to sea, sea to sea, or air to air. Training in this field will determine if you graduate or not. Also scores will be posted at the end of each training section to determine your rank compared to other students

More classes can be added for other courses, be they shipwrights or bird flying.
